Here to help.

Rootkeep is made by one person. There is no ticket queue, no chatbot, and no hold music. Your email lands in my inbox and I answer it myself.

Usually a reply within a day or two.

How do I get started?

Add two or three people you have been meaning to catch up with. Import them from your phone’s contacts or just type a name, whichever is faster.

Then log one thing you already know: coffee last Thursday, he is moving in the spring, she starts at the hospital in May. Type “any follow up?” into the note and Rootkeep turns it into a reminder by itself. That is the whole loop, and the Home screen starts answering who needs you as soon as it has something to go on.

Where does my data actually live?

In a SQLite database file on your phone, and nowhere else. There is no account and no server behind Rootkeep, which is why it works on a plane and why I cannot look anything up for you even if you ask me to.

How do I back it up?

Settings, then turn on iCloud backup. It is off by default. Once on, Rootkeep keeps a copy in your own private iCloud container under your Apple ID, and on a fresh install it offers to restore what it finds there.

If you never turn it on, nothing is backed up anywhere. That is worth knowing before you lose a phone rather than after.

How do I get an Anthropic API key?

Sign in at console.anthropic.com, open Settings, then API keys, and create one. Paste it into Rootkeep’s AI settings and it stays on your device.

Anthropic bills you directly for what you use, and you can set a spending limit in the same console. The advisor is entirely optional. Skip it and every other part of the app works the same.

How do I delete everything?

Settings, then Delete All Data. It clears the local database: contacts, interactions, promises, goals, all of it, with no copy kept anywhere for me to recover. Deleting the app clears the local data too.

If you had iCloud backup switched on, remove Rootkeep’s data from your Apple ID storage settings as well, since that copy lives in your account rather than in the app.
